How long did we walk, and where, I have no clear memory. Only certain scenes remain in my mind.

When the sun went down and the night dew rolled in, we spread our futon on the ground.

The night air made the ground and grass wet.

The smell of the wet ground and grass filled the late autumn air.

At night the vast plains surrounding us grew relentlessly cold.

The time must have been near the end of September. The smells of the plains contained hints of the fast-approaching winter so typical of the north.

The insects had grown quiet, the plains shrouded in silence. The faint ringing in my ears reverberated in the darkness, seeming to echo in the night. We slept covered solely by the smells of the night air. It was in this deathlike hush that we finally found sleep.

We began walking every morning at sunrise. The white morning mist flowed over the ground. It came wavering out of the earth and mounted to the heavens, creating celestial music.

As if drawn on by the tones of this music, I kept wandering over this vacuous wasteland. The earth would disappear in the morning mist, and the mist would cling coldly to my legs. A fog would rise as thick as paint on a canvas, and light up my heart in a faint glow.
